Gilvray and Terikel vanished almost as soon as the Journey Guard arrived in Karunsel. This was not good diplomacy, as there was going to be a ball on the second night to celebrate Senterri arriving in her new domain. Senterri appointed Laron to command the Journey Guard in Gilvray’s absence, which was calculated to annoy Gilvray when he returned. This it certainly did, but Gilvray took it as punishment for his affair with Terikel, and made no outburst. Because they had not recently done anything heroic, neither the guardsmen, reccons, nor militiamen were invited to the ball. Laron was the exception, being the most senior officer present, but he merely attended without a partner, spoke politely to whoever spoke to him, declined all offers to dance, and left early.

The morning after the ball, Andry and Wallas took the cart to one of the Karunsel markets to buy supplies for the last leg of the trip. By now Wallas’s skills as a cook had been recognized all the way up the chain of command to Senterri, and he had quite a long list of supplies to purchase, plus the silver to pay.

“Good oil, you can never have enough Karunsel oil,” Wallas said as he loaded the sixth large jar aboard the cart.

“Especially if you’re going to be boiled in it for unloading secrets to a notorious spy,” responded Andry.

“Will you shut up about that? What else? Lamp oil, mixed with essence of crushed minderic.”

“Lamp oil and minderic?”

“It keeps the mosquitos away when burned at open air dinners, and it has a very pleasant scent. The princess asked for it especially.”

Wallas vanished back into the market’s crowds, leaving Andry to watch over the cart. Several suspicious-looking characters were lurking nearby, and Andry noticed how they looked away when he glanced in the direction of any of them. He found himself glancing about almost continually, and began to regret not bringing Costiger to keep watch back-to-back with him.

“Brother Tennoner!”

Andry had been glancing about so much in search of suspicious characters trying to look innocent that he had failed to notice the approach of four genuinely innocent characters—even though one was wearing heavily tinted spectacles and had a hand over his mouth almost constantly.

“Wilbar, just the lad I want to see!” he exclaimed. “Hurry, up into the cart, sit back-to-back with me, and watch for riffraff.”

Wilbar climbed up, and those who had been circling the cart discreetly now became genuinely uninterested in it.

“Brother, we heard the princess was coming, and we were hoping you would be with her,” explained Wilbar.

“And Elder Terikel,” called Maeber, hopping on the spot and waving his arm as if he were seeking permission to dash off and find a privy.

“We’re out of money,” said Riellen bluntly, and Andry glanced down to see that she was dressed as a boy, and had even cut her hair to shoulder length. “We were wondering if the Elder could get us permission to travel to Logiar with the Journey Guards.”

“What?” exclaimed Andry. “A
